Our annual emissions calculation is complete – Matkahuolto’s carbon footprint significantly reduced in 2023
Our greenhouse gas emissions calculation for 2023 covering the entire company and domestic parcel services has been completed. The calculation shows that over the past year we have managed to significantly reduce our carbon footprint compared to 2020. As a result of our emission reduction measures, our total emissions (Scope 1–3) decreased by 25%.
“It is of paramount importance for us to succeed in the emission reductions set out in our Climate Roadmap in order to achieve the emission reduction target endorsed by the international SBT initiative and halve our emissions from 2020 levels by 2030,” says Jaana Korkiakoski, Sustainability Director at Matkahuolto.
Our emissions calculation is based on the GHG protocol, the most widely used international standard for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions. The results of the calculation have been verified by Gaia Consulting.
Emissions per parcel reduced by around 20%
Our own operations account for around 10% of our carbon footprint and our value chain for around 90%. The vast majority of emissions from the value chain, around 60%, come from parcel transport. Compared to 2022, our emissions per parcel have decreased by around 20%.
We have managed to reduce emissions by switching to renewable diesel for our domestic trunk transport. In addition to the switch to renewable fuels, we have made trunk transport more efficient through changes in transport capacity and the introduction of HCT vehicles, which have replaced smaller vehicles. In addition, a switch to renewable diesel was made in the delivery & pick-up service in the Hämeenlinna and Turku regions at the beginning of 2023.
Including renewable fuels, our Climate Roadmap contains more than 40 science-based measures that will contribute to our sustainability goals and halve all our emissions by 2030. Check out the progress of our sustainability work in our latest Annual and Sustainability Report.
