Damage in transit

Matkahuolto’s liability for any loss or damage is governed by the provisions of the Finnish Road Transport Agreements Act (23.2.1979/345) and the General Conditions of Carriage for Goods applied by Matkahuolto.

A complaint or claim regarding any reduction in or damage to goods in domestic transportation must be filed with the carrier on receiving the goods if such reduction or damage can be visibly determined; if not, the claim must be made in writing within seven (7) days of receiving. Sundays or other public holidays are not included in the said seven-day period (section 40a of the Road Transport Agreements Act).

Damage in transit can be reported

Using the electronic compensation claim form. Complete the form, upload the scanned or electronic attachments and submit. If you wish to print the application, use the browser Print function before clicking the Submit button.
If you are unable to scan the attachments, send them by mail to: Oy Matkahuolto Ab, Vahingonkorvaushakemukset, PL 111, 00201 Helsinki. Indicate your contact details, the consignment number of the damaged consignment and a mention that you have submitted an electronic compensation claim on every attachment.

Using a compensation claim form sent by post. Complete and print the application and send it by mail with attachments to: Oy Matkahuolto Ab, Vahingonkorvaushakemukset, PL 111, 00201 Helsinki.

Matkahuolto’s liability is limited as follows:

a) If the consignment is lost or completely destroyed, compensation shall be paid according to the fair value up to the maximum liability for loss and damage defined in the Road Transport Agreements Act, including the charges collected by Matkahuolto for carriage.

b) If the consignment is reduced or damaged in part, compensation shall be paid according to the fair market value up to the maximum liability for loss and damage defined in the Road Transport Agreements Act relative to the reduced or destroyed portion of the goods. Additionally, the cost of the charges collected by Matkahuolto will be refunded relative to the portion of goods so reduced or destroyed.

A precondition for any payment of compensation is that the damage is first verified by Matkahuolto. The damaged goods, package and protective materials may not be disposed of because they will be examined by Matkahuolto. Take the damaged goods and packaging to the nearest Matkahuolto terminal or agree on the verification and inspection of damage with the Matkahuolto.

If compensation equivalent to the fair value of the goods is paid, ownership of the goods is transferred to Matkahuolto.

If goods that were reported lost and that due compensation was paid for are later found or their whereabouts are determined, Matkahuolto must be promptly informed of this. A report with the police is filed for all lost consignments.

If the consignment is insured elsewhere, file the insurance claim with your insurance company.
